Egg Donation Process. IVF and Egg Donor
In 1984 first successful pregnancy using egg donation was performed. Since that time due to the medical achievements egg donation has become quite a popular and effective method of ART.
Because of different pathologies of ovaries or some other reasons, very often women’s follicles stop their development and, at the same time, production of the eggs. In such cases, egg donation is used.
What is egg donation process?
Egg donation is a process when eggs produced by a healthy woman-donor are fertilized with the sperm of patient’s husband (or donor) and then these embryos are transferred to the infertile patient’s uterus. Egg donation is also used in cases when: a woman doesn’t have ovaries; there is a possibility of the transmission of hereditary diseases to a child; numerous unsuccessful IVF cycles because of the low quality of eggs.
Egg donation is legally allowed by the Ukrainian legislation (Law 787 from 09.09.2013 of the Health Ministry of Ukraine)
How does it work?
First of all, egg donor and infertile woman’s cycles are synchronized using special hormonal agents. At the same time, donor’s ovaries are stimulated and a patient is prescribed special medicines for a successful embryo transfer. Then donor’s eggs are punctured and fertilized with a prepared sperm at the lab. In 3-5 days 2-3 embryos are transferred to the patient’s uterus as by the usual IVF cycle. In 2 weeks pregnancy test is made. If its result is positive, a patient is prescribed a special course of supporting therapy.
As egg donors are young healthy women under 32, egg donation is quite a successful method of infertility treatment. In some cases, egg donation is the only chance to conceive and have a long-awaited child. But sometimes using egg donation is not an easy decision for childless spouses.
